Best places to work disclosures

The rankings are based on an employer inventory of practices and an anonymous survey of employees, who were asked to agree or disagree with dozens of statements about the firm, teamwork and their individual experiences.

Alabama

No. 1
Business Alabama Magazine teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state’s top 18 employers. Companies named Best Workplaces in Alabama for 2020 were divided into 10 small/medium companies and eight large companies by the number of people they employ in Alabama.

Arizona

No. 24
This list is sponsored by the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) and Republic Media. The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com partnered with Best Companies Group to rank the state's top 120 employers. Companies named Top Companies to Work for in Arizona for 2020 were divided into 33 large companies, 45 midsize and 42 small companies by the number of people they employ in Arizona.

Phoenix – No. 4
Phoenix Business Journal teamed up with Quantum Workplace of Omaha, Neb., to rank the metro area's top 100 employers. Companies named Best Places to Work in 2019 were divided into 10 extra-large, 15 large, 20 medium, 20 small and 35 micro companies by the number of people they employ in the Phoenix metro area.

California

San Diego – No. 13
The San Diego Union-Tribune teamed up with research partner Workplace Dynamics of Exton, Pa., to rank the state's top 85 employers. Companies named Top Workplaces in Atlanta for 2019 were divided into 10 large companies, 24 midsize companies and 51 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in San Diego.

Colorado

No. 2
The Denver Post teamed up with Energage of Exton, Pa., to rank the state's top 150 employers. Companies named Top Workplaces in 2019 were divided into 35 large, 50 midsize and 65 small companies by the number of people they employ in Colorado.

Connecticut

No. 2
The Hartford Business Journal teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state's top 41 employers. Companies named Best Places to Work in Connecticut for 2020 were divided into 14 large companies and 27 small or medium companies by the number of people they employ in Connecticut.

Florida

FloridaTrend teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state’s top 100 employers. Companies named Best Companies to Work for in Florida for 2020 were divided into 40 small companies, 31 medium companies and 29 large companies by the number of people they employ in Florida.

Georgia

Atlanta – No. 8
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution teamed up with research partner Energage to rank the area’s top 150 employers. Companies named Atlanta Top Workplaces for 2020 were divided into 22 large companies, 63 medium companies and 65 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in the Atlanta area.

Hawaii

Hawaii Business Magazine teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state’s top 75 employers. Companies named Best Places to Work in Hawaii for 2020 were divided into 10 large companies, 31 medium, and 34 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in Hawaii.

BizVoice teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state’s top 125 employers. Companies named Best Places to Work in Indiana for 2020 were divided into 52 small companies, 40 medium companies, 23 large companies and 10 major companies, by the number of people they employ in Indiana.

Iowa

The Des Moines Register teamed up with the Energage to rank the state’s top 116 employers. Companies named Iowa Top Workplaces 2020 were divided into 18 large companies, 35 mid-size companies and 63 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in Iowa.

The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state’s top 100 employers. Companies named Best Workplaces in Kentucky for 2020 were divided into 31 large companies, 31 medium companies and 38 small companies by the number of people they employ in Kentucky.

Maine

Mainebiz Magazine teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state’s top 84 employers. Companies named Best Workplaces in Maine for 2020 were divided into 26 small companies, 39 medium companies and 19 large companies by the number of people they employ in Maine.

Michigan

The Detroit Free Press teamed up with research partner Energage to rank the state’s top 185 employers. Companies named Michigan Top Workplaces for 2020 were divided into 65 large companies, 55 midsize companies and 65 small companies by the number of people they employ in Michigan.

Minnesota

No. 9
The Star Tribune teamed up with research partner WorkplaceDynamics of Exton, Pa., to rank the state's top 150 employers. Companies named Top Workplaces in Minnesota for 2020 were divided into 30 large, 50 midsize and 70 small companies by the number of people they employ in Minnesota.

Missouri

Kansas city – No. 3
The Kansas City Business Journal teamed up with Quantum Market Research to rank Kansas City-area companies on their best practices. The "Best Places to Work" in Kansas City ranking is employee-driven, with the scoring based on how associates respond to an anonymous survey designed to measure the quality of workplace culture. For the two consecutive years of participation, Edward Jones has ranked in the top three.

New Jersey

No. 5
NJBiz teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state’s top 120 employers. Companies named Best Places to Work in New Jersey for 2020 were divided into 40 large companies and 48 medium and 32 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in New Jersey.

New Mexico

No. 3
The Albuquerque Journal teamed up with research partner WorkplaceDynamics of Exton, Pa., to rank the state’s top 55 employers. Companies were named Top Workplaces in New Mexico were divided into seven large companies, 15 medium companies and 33 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in New Mexico.

The New York State Society for Human Resource Management teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state’s top 75 employers. Companies named Best Companies to Work for in New York for 2020 were divided into 27 large companies, 21 medium companies and 27 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in New York.

North Carolina

Business North Carolina Magazine teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa. to rank the state's top 55 employers. Companies named Best Employers in North Carolina for 2020 were divided into 19 large, 18 medium and 18 small companies based on the number of people they employ in North Carolina.

The Charlotte Business Journal teamed up with research partner Quantum Workplace to rank the area’s top 80 employers. Companies named Best Places to Work in Charlotte for 2020 were divided into five extra-large companies, 25 large companies, 25 midsize companies and 25 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in Charlotte.

Raleigh/Durham No. 1
The Triangle Business Journal teamed up with research partner Quantum Workplace to rank the area’s top 50 employers. Companies named Best Places to Work in the Triangle for 2020 were divided into 10 extra-large companies, 15 large companies, 15 medium companies and 10 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in the Triangle region.

Ohio

The Ohio SHRM State Council teamed up with the Best Companies group of Harrisburg, Pa., and local partner SHRM to rank the state's top 42 employers. Companies were named Best Employers in Ohio for 2020, divided into 22 large companies and 20 medium- and small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in Ohio.

Oklahoma

The Journal Record teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state’s top 32 employers. Companies named Best Places to Work in Oklahoma for 2020 were divided into 15 large companies and 17 small- tp-medium companies by the number of people they employ in Oklahoma.

Oregon

No. 1
The Oregonian teamed up with research partner WorkplaceDynamics of Exton, Pa., to rank the state’s top 100 employers. Companies named Top Oregon Workplaces for 2016 were divided into 10 large companies, 40 medium companies, and 50 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in Oregon.

Pennsylvania

Central Penn Business Journal teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state's top 100 employers. Companies named Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania for 2019 were divided into 49 large companies, 27 medium and 24 small companies by the number of people they employ in Pennsylvania.

Providence Business News teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state’s top 66 employers. The Dallas Morning News teamed up with research partner Energage to rank the area’s top 100 employers. Companies named Dallas/Fort Worth Top 100 Places to Work for 2020 were divided into 30 large companies, 35 medium companies and 35 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Houston – No. 3
The Houston Chronicle teamed up with research partner Workplace Dynamics of Exton, PA., to rank the state's top 150 employers. Companies named Top Workplaces for 2016 were divided into 30 large companies, 50 midsize companies and 70 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in Houston.

Vermont

No. 1
Vermont Business teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state’s top 51 employers. Companies named Best Places to Work in Vermont for 2020 were divided into 27 small companies, 13 medium companies and 11 large companies by the number of people they employ in Vermont.

Virginia

No. 3
Virginia Business Magazine teamed up with the Best Companies Group of Harrisburg, Pa., to rank the state's top 100 employers. Companies named Best Places to Work in Virginia for 2020 were divided into 24 large companies, 21 medium companies and 55 small-sized companies by the number of people they employ in Virginia.

Seattle Business teamed up with research company Fieldwork Webwork to rank the state’s top 100 employers. Companies named Best Companies to Work in Washington for 2016 were divided into 17 companies headquartered out of state, plus locally headquartered large (32), mid-size (23) and small-sized (28) companies by the number of people they employ in Washington.
